November 3, 2006 – The state-run child welfare systems in Fulton and DeKalb Counties have demonstrated significant improvement in the past year, according to a report by court-appointed monitors. As part of a settlement reached last year between the Department of Human Resources’ Division of Family and Children Services (DFCS) and plaintiffs in the Kenny A. v. Perdue lawsuit, both sides agreed to specific goals and benchmarks for measuring the quality of child welfare services in those counties. The report, covering the period between October 27, 2005, and June 30, 2006, is the first from independent agents monitoring those results. Of the seven measures they looked at, the State achieved or exceeded four and made significant progress on the remaining three.

October 26, 2006 – In recognition of National Adoption Awareness Month, the Georgia Department of Human Resource’s Division of Family and Children Services (DFCS) will host the 11th Annual "Celebrating Adoption" event at Zoo Atlanta. This event will be held Saturday, Nov. 4th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Ford Pavilion at Zoo Atlanta, 800 Cherokee Avenue.

October 2, 2006 – Gift for a Child, Inc. and the Heart Gallery Southeast, in cooperation with the Division of Family and Children Services (DFCS) is hosting a Photographic exhibit at the Bank of America Plaza in Downtown Atlanta beginning October 3rd to benefit Children in foster care.
September 14, 2006 – Beginning September 18t h, the Division of Family and Children Services (DFCS) will hold regional roundtable discussions across Georgia in order to provide DFCS and local community groups with an opportunity to enhance community action and partnerships. DFCS is working to engage Community and Faith-Based Organizations around the state in an ongoing effort to strengthen Georgia families and children.
September 12, 2006 – On Wednesday, Sept 13th, the Georgia Department of Human Resources (DHR) and its partner organizations will be presented with a $1 million grant from the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) to develop a web-based food stamp application program.
August 21, 2006 – The State of Georgia’s Child Welfare Education grant will be expanded this year with new offerings in North and South Georgia for those interested in becoming social workers. The Child Welfare Education (IV-E) Grant program provides tuition assistance for those interested in the social services field.
August 14, 2006 – Renota Free has been named the new director of the Rabun County Department of Family and Children Services (DFCS), effective August 16th, according to state DFCS Director Mary Dean Harvey.
July 21, 2006 - On August 19th, Stonecrest Mall and Crossroads News, in cooperation with the Georgia Department of Human Resources’ Division of Family and Children Services (DFCS), will sponsor an Adoption Resource Fair. This resource fair will provide information to prospective adoptive parents who are interested in opening their home to a child currently living in foster care.

June 19, 2006 - On Wednesday, June 21, 2006, the Department of Human Resources (DHR) and the Freddie Mac Foundation will celebrate six years of success for the Wednesday’s Child Program in Georgia. Each week, children waiting for adoption are profiled on WAGA-TV, a segment known as Wednesday’s Child. The segment is hosted by news anchor Amanda Davis. During these broadcasts viewers are encouraged to help these children find homes.
June 20, 2006-ATLANTA (GA) – This summer the Department of Human Resources (DHR) is announcing over $3.1 million in funding for a series of initiatives to support vulnerable families and children in the Augusta area. DHR will provide funding to help meet the cooling needs of low income families; sponsor a summer youth program to provide young people with productive activities that stress recreation and learning; and implementation of a statewide crisis and access line for Georgians seeking mental health, developmental disability and behavioral health services.
June 9, 2006 - There are many children in Georgia who are in the custody of the Division of Family and Children Services (DFCS). Because these children these children need a summer break as much as their foster parents need a period of rest, Camp Earthling was founded.
June 9, 2006 - On June 14th the “Celebration of Excellence” will award scholarships to twenty five current and former Georgia foster kids as they enter college or graduate school. The Celebration of Excellence will also honor those children in foster care who are graduating from high school, GED program, vocational school or college.
June 5, 2006 - For the first time since 2000, the Department of Human Resources (DHR) is providing cooling assistance for low income Georgians through the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). With the allocation of $4.1 million by Governor Perdue, along with additional Federal funding, the state of Georgia has received $54 million for Energy Assistance.
June 2, 2006 – The 14th Annual "Celebration of Excellence" will be held on June 14, 2006, at the Fox Theater in Atlanta. This event is designed to recognize the academic achievements of youths in foster care who are graduating from high school, GED program, vocational school, or college. The Celebration of Excellence will also provide over $92,000 in scholarships to selected youth who are continuing their education.
June 2, 2006 - On June 24th, One Church One Child of Georgia will sponsor a Foster Care and Adoption Resource Fair. This resource fair will provide information to prospective foster and adoptive parents on the needs of children in state custody.
May 18, 2006 – The Division of Family and Children Services (DFCS) is announcing a rate increase for Georgia's Childcare and Parent Services program, CAPS. The CAPS program provides financial assistance for child care to over 38,000 low-income Georgia families, representing 70,000 children across the state.“This rate increase is in response to a Market Rate Survey that was completed in 2005 which showed that child care rates have risen across the state. It is aimed at helping low income families with access to affordable child care,” said DFCS Deputy Director Martha Okafor.

May 15, 2006 - A statewide initiative that helps to prevent child abuse has served over 300 families, representing 431 children in the West Georgia region. The Promoting Safe and Stable Families Program (PSSF) Network continues to provide support services for children and families throughout West Georgia.
